How to Refer a Patient for Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Treatment
FES Northwest accepts NHS-funded and privately-funded referrals. Private self-referrals are possible, and we may get in touch with the GP to complete the ‘Referral Checklist’.
Currently the NHS will only consider funding for foot drop as a result of an UMNL and the Functional Criteria for standard (or in some cases non-standard) FES devices. Exceptions to this can be forwarded to the patient’s ICB for consideration. For those areas without commissioning arrangements an Individual Funding Request (IFR) needs to be completed prior to assessment and treatment. This is usually completed by the client/patient’s GP, however, please get in touch if you require our help.
Our referral checklist is used to refer a client/patient. The form is to be completed with as much information as possible and returned to us at office@fesnorthwest.co.uk.
Once a referral has been received by us, we will contact the client/patient to arrange an initial face to face assessment at their most convenient clinic location.
Our clinician will then assess their suitability and if the patient has a positive response to FES, arrangements will be made to set them up with an FES device.
The client/patient is required to attend follow-up clinic sessions in their first year, with 1 or 2 reviews per annum thereafter, which may take place via video call as determined by the clinician. It is a requirement for NHS funded referrals that the appointments are attended and treatment effectiveness is evaluated.
